The mission of Selected Readings Editions is to increase the opportunities for secondary school students to experience some of the greatest works of literature ever written.
Toward that end, we have created editions that contain a selection of representative readings from timeless literary works that will provide students with a thoroughly rewarding reading experience. For the high school English curriculum we offer five such editions: “Don Quixote,” “Huckleberry Finn,” “The Scarlet Letter,” and both verse and prose versions of “The Odyssey.” We also offer full-length versions of “All Quiet on the Western Front,” “The Great Gatsby,” and “Heart of Darkness.” For middle school English classes we offer “Ulysses’ Voyage Home,” a prose version of “The Odyssey” that presents just the seagoing episodes, “Ulysses’ Return,” a prose version of “The Odyssey” that recounts the story of Ulysses’ battle with the suitors and his reuniting with his wife Penelope, and “Don Quixote and My Uncle Sal,” a novella that includes paraphrased episodes from Cervantes’ novel and can serve as a stimulating way to introduce students to Cervantes’ masterpiece. Each book includes comprehension questions and enrichment sections to facilitate instruction, and the teachers’ editions come with extensive annotations. We also offer “A Short Anthology of Short Poetry,” a survey of the history of poetry from Sappho and Homer to Edna St. Vincent Millay and Langston Hughes with an emphasis on the poems of Walt Whitman and Emily Dickinson.
