I Saw That With These Eyes: Slave Testimony Poetry
“I Saw That With These Eyes: Slave Testimony Poetry” | 60 pages. Available as a free e-book
“I Saw That With These Eyes: Slave Testimony Poetry” is a first-hand account of the slavery experience in the form of found poetry. Each poem consists of the actual words of slaves or former slaves that were compiled from interviews, letters, speeches, interviews, and autobiographies by John W. Blassingame and published in his extraordinary book “Slave Testimony: Two Centuries of Letters, Speeches, Interviews, and Autobiographies.” Students at Hudson County Community College then took some of those words and created poems in which every line was either written or spoken by slaves or former slaves, often former slaves who escaped to Canada and were interviewed by their local newspapers. This book is only available as a free PDF or as a free e-book for any device with the Kindle app.
